Gun powder was originally a combination of ground saltpeter, ground charcoal and ground sulfur. the original gun powder had problems. one it gumed up your gun, two it produced too much smoke. we now use a much more usefull and smokeless powder i forget the name though...

The first type of gunpowder was black powder which created smoke. Some firearms and other non-firearm related items use black powder for other uses (historical recreation). Most firearms nowadays that have cartridged bullets use a smokeless powder.

There are two types of air guns. One is a tool that is driven by a compressor rather than by hand. It is used to remove/install nuts and bolts on equipment. The other is an air gun like a real gun that fires a projectile, that is driven by gas or compressed air rather than gun powder.
Because of the different burning rate of the various types of gun powder used in loading shotshells there is very, very little correlation between the two terms. Shot shell manufactures should have dropped the term 90 years ago.
The two common forms are black powder, and smokeless powder. Both are low explosives, used to propel a bullet. While they arer different chemically, both contain a fuel and an oxidizer mixed together. When ignited, they burn very quickly, producing rapidly expanding gasses (which is what propels the bullet)
