The spinning motion of the Earth creates day and night and is rotation.

The orbiting of the earth around the sun is known as revolution.

The whole Solar System revolves around the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

The Milky Way is also slowly moving toward the Andromeda Galaxy.

The first and most important movement of the earth is its path around the sun.

All planets describe an elliptical path around the sun. In the case of the earth this path is almost circular.Travelling at approx. 67,000 miles per hour, it takes the earth a year to complete one orbit. We do not notice this rapid progress of the earth as the earth's atmosphere travels as part and parcel of what we know as the earth. Since there are 8760 hours in a year (24x365), it follows that the earth travels approx. 587,000,000 miles in a single orbit.

The second movement of the earth is its rotation on its axis. The axis is an imaginary straightline drawn through the centre of the earth. this axis is inclined at an angle of 23.5 degrees to the perpendicular.The earth takes one whole day to make a single complete rotation on its axis. During this time that half of the earth facing away from the sun will be in darkness. It is this "laid back" position of the earth, due to its inclination to the perpendicular as it passes round the sun that gives us the seasons, since depending on the time of year, some areas of the surface of the earth will receive more radiation from the sun than others. The result of this is that we experience summer in the Northern hemisphere when it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere (i.e. Australia and New Zealand)
