There are 3 species of elephants: African, African Forest & Asian, also called Indian Elephants. Through adaptation and evolution they are physically different. The African Forest & Asian Elephants are smaller, have smaller ears, and have a different, higher number of toenails (5 front/4 hind)than do the African Elephants that are larger, taller; have larger ears to help them stay cool in drier, very hot, open spaces; and have with a smaller number of toenails (4/3 hind). Tusks (straighter versus arched plus size) and the roundness of their backs are also different.

Generally the living members of the the family Elephantidae (elephants) are divided into two species: the African Elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus), although some evidence suggests that African Bush Elephants and African Forest Elephants may be separate species (L. africana and L. cyclotis respectively).

Extinct members of the family Elephantidae include the Mammoths (extinct) and Palaeoloxodon, an extinct genus that includes the various species of straight-tusked elephants.
