After Oliver Cromwell's death, the power of the government was passed to his son, Richard Cromwell. However, after two year's of Richard's death, the people demanded the monarchy back and Charles II was reinstated as King of England.

Oliver Cromwell never gave orders to execute any King.After the English Civil War Charles 1 was held a Windsor Castle. The House of Commons passed an Act of Parliament that created a court to try the King for treason. The High Court of Justice, set up by the Act, consisted of 135 Commissioners. After being found guilty by the court and sentenced to death, 59 Commissioners, including Oliver Cromwell, signed his death warrant.

Oliver Cromwell was a Puritan, and his army was called the New Model Army. Opinions are divided as to whether he was a hero or a genocidal dictator. The Irish in particular hated him as he brutally subjugated the Irish people and forbid them to practice their Catholic religion. Some believe that he was a hero for ending the institution of absolute monarchy and promoted tolerance in religion (apparently excepting Catholics). He felt that God was guiding his military and political actions. Cromwell's government was only successful as long as he lived. After he died, the monarchy was restored and his body was exhumed, beheaded and hanged.
