A few years, a Dorling Kindersley production stated there were about 32 species of lemur. However there is so much redoing of certain areas of classification that now it has been announced by wikipedia that are about 93 species, including dwarf lemurs, sportive lemurs, aye ayes, sifakas and indris. Genera include Daubentonia, Indri, Hapalemur, Eulemur, Prolemur, Lemur, Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Phaner
It depends on what you mean by "type". Do you mean species or taxa? ("Taxa" refers to both species and subspecies.) Regardless, it depends on who you talk to. Some lemur experts favor lower numbers of species and a high number of subspecies, while others prefer classifying most lemurs as distinct species. Either way, there are *at least* 70 lemur taxa and possibly as many as 100 or more species.
There are 17 species of extinct lemur (known as "subfossil lemurs"), most of which fall into 3 distinct families: Palaeopropithecidae (sloth lemurs), Megaladapidae (koala lemurs), and Archaeolemuridae (monkey lemurs). The remaining extinct lemurs include close relatives of living lemur species: the giant aye-aye (Daubentonia robusta) and the "giant ruffed lemurs" (Pachylemur).
Nearly all of these extinct lemurs died out after humans arrived on the island roughly 2,000 years ago. Some lived until as recently as 500 years ago, or possibly within the last few hundred years.
