like catching speeders on a highway with the mean value theorem
It requires that f(a)=f(b) where a and b are beginning and ending points. Also, it says there is a c between a and such that f'(c)=0. If f were not differentiable on the open interval, the statement f'(c)=0 would be invalid.
I doubt that any job except high school geometry teacher use this theorem regularly. However, every one with a little sense knows it and uses it as needed.

If a function is continuous on [a, b], differentiable on (a, b), and it is zero at a and b (f(a) = 0 and f(b) = 0), then there must be some value c such that a < c < b where the derivative is zero (means the tangent line above or below c will be a horizontal tangent).
