A Windsock is a tube made of cloth usually hung close to runways in airports. It is used to indicate wind direction and speed.

In addition to airports, windsocks are also used close to chemical plants, where there is risk of gas leaks. They are also sometimes used close to highways.

Wind direction is the opposite direction to which the windsock is pointing. Windspeed is indicated by the windsock's angle to the pole. When the winds are strong, the windsock flies horizontally.
It tells which way the wind is blowing. You will usually see them at Airports.

A device used to indicate wind direction. ---- A: It's a device made of cloth or cloth-like material, that is shaped like a cone, perhaps 6 feet long (but can be longer or shorter). When the wind blows, it inflates the sock and the windsock turns so that the wide, open end faces the wind, and the short end extends behind the wide end, so that the whole windsock points in the direction the wind is blowing. Pilots use this so they can tell what direction (and sometimes how strongly) the wind is blowing on the runway, when they land or take off.
