You need to know the coins' dates and mint marks. For 1917 coins you also have to know whether there are stars below the eagle or not.
The mint mark position is above and to the left of the date. It may be blank, or there may be a D or S. The M on the other side is not a mint mark, it's the designer's monogram.

Standing liberty quarters were made from 1916- 1930. Barber quarters were made from 1892-1916. The design of Liberty on a Barber quarters shows only the head while Standing Liberty quarters show her whole body. The tails sides are also different.

Standing Liberty Quarters have vastly different values depending on their grades. If your coin is well worn, that is, if you can't see the full union shield on Liberty's shield, it is worth about $6 for the silver in it. If it is in better condition, it can be worth around $30-50+ depending on its condition. It isn't a rare date but high-grade standing liberty quarters are always in demand and if it is certified as a high grade (MS-63+) it can be worth over $100.
