Volt-Ohm Meter

Perhaps the most important safety tool is the volt-ohm meter (VOM), which measures the wires' voltage and electrical resistance in volts and ohms, respectively. It is used to troubleshoot appliances, and as a test to check whether a particular wall outlet is broken. A multi-tester is an expanded version of a volt-ohm meter as it can measure electric current as well as voltage and electrical resistance. Use of this device will prevent you from electric shock as you will know whether it is safe to work with the wiring.

Jumper Wire

A jumper wire is used to test for open electrical circuits. Electricians sometimes make their own jumper wire or they can be purchased at electricity stores. A jumper wire can help you better understand the circuitry and so avoid the chance of an electrical shock. It is most important never to use a jumper wire on a live appliance.

Neon Circuit Tester

A neon circuit tester glows when electric current is present. This tool is used to check electric current in wall outlets. It is preferable to purchase a neon circuit tester in the range of 120 to 240 volts, so that you will be able to use it with most outlet voltages. However, you can purchase a neon circuit tester with a higher or lower voltage capacity if necessary.

Tape Measure

A tape measure is use to measure heights for switches and outlets. You will also need it to center lighting fixture boxes.

Hammer

A hammer is used to secure boxes equipped with nail-on brackets to studs in a home. You'll also need it to drive Romex straps when adding new Romex wiring in a home.

Pliers

pliers are used to take knockouts out of the boxes, tighten down Romex connectors in the boxes, and adjust expansion-type ceiling-fan boxes.

Wire Strippers

Wire strippers are used to cut the insulation off of the wire. They are equipped with different sized cutting teeth for various sized wires. They also have a cutoff portion in order to cut the wire.

Wrench

wrenches are used to tighten Allen-headed screws in your electrical panel.

Sre driver

This screwdriver is used for straight slot screws. You will likely need more than one size for your project. If you have to choose just one, pick a medium blade. It will suit most projects.

Gloves

The first piece of safety apparel that electricians use are gloves, as they are usually first touch wires or conductive pieces of electrical equipment with their hands. Gloves should be made out of nonconductive materials that are not too thick so that electricians still have some dexterity to actually handle and cut wires. This means gloves should be made out of plastic or rubber composites which fit the form of the hand. However, these gloves will only protect you so much in the event of a serious arc or short of electricity. Other precautions and knowledge of what wires are hot or should not be touched together are still the most important form of electrical safety.

Thick Rubber-Soled Shoes

Heavy-duty work boots with thick rubber soles are also recommended for electricians who are working with any amount of electricity. As electricity doesn't conduct through rubber, these rubber soles will help to keep you from being grounded against the floor so that if you do touch something that is highly electrical, harmful electricity won't be able to flow through you as easily and seriously injure you through electrocution. These rubber soled shoes will also protect you from being electrocuted in the event there is water on the ground and it has become electrified. While it doesn't mean walking through this water is a good idea to walk through water that has electricity running through it, but the rubber soles will give you a chance to get out of it before you get hurt.

Electrical tape (or insulating tape) is a type of pressure-sensitive tape used to insulate electrical wires and other material that conduct electricity. It can be made of many plastics, but vinyl is most popular; it stretches well and gives an effective and long lasting insulation. Electrical tape for class H insulation, however, is made of fiberglass cloth instead of a form of plastic.
