a solo by a singer is called an "aria". It is essentially one voice singing by itself without any other voices.
what became as important as vocal singing music
A soprano is a singing voice with a vocal range from approximately middle C (C4) to "high A" (A5) in choral music, or to "soprano C" or higher in operatic music. In four part chorale style harmony, the soprano takes the highest part which usually encompasses the melody.
Roger Taylor was capable of hitting the high notes that we hear in songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody (at the end of the operatic section) and in In The Lap Of The Gods. This was falsetto however, and that is not considered part of vocal range. Apart from that however, he did have a good singing voice. I can imagine he was close to three octaves but I'm unsure.
Is it Mario Lanza?
I'm sure it's possible for a virtuoso singer the sing rock; you can always change the timbre of your voice to match a particular singing style, so long as you know how to. It's not impossible at all. 'Naturally operatic' is a bit of a misnomer, because operatic voices have to be trained- they don't just happen really.
