Economically, it drains money from people in the form of collection and donations; money which could be spent on more useful things such as healthcare or public education. Socially it constricts us because it threatens you into changing your personal behaviors; ie If you steal you'll go to hell.
Religion does have an impact upon society. However, you have to narrow your question so that it addresses (many) issues.
In short --- religion "keeps us in place". It keeps up from being Barbarians. It keeps us away from adultery; it helps us to be stronger in the face of danger; it helps us love each other, etc., etc.

Unfortunately there are bigoted people who prevent equal rights for women and gays.
Fortunately some religions do a lot of humanitarian work--soup kitchens, war relief, etc.
