In 1520, he was a Portuguese seaman sailing for Spain and reached the southernmost tip of South America. He sailed through stormy waters of a strait into the ocean Balboa had seen. The waters were so peaceful [pacifico in Spanish] that Magellan named the ocean Pacific. Although Magellan later died in the Philippine Islands, his crew continued west, arriving in Spain in 1522. They became the first known people to circumnavigate the world.
