In 1520, he was a Portuguese seaman sailing for Spain and reached the southernmost tip of South America. He sailed through stormy waters of a strait into the ocean Balboa had seen. The waters were so peaceful [pacifico in Spanish] that Magellan named the ocean Pacific. Although Magellan later died in the Philippine Islands, his crew continued west, arriving in Spain in 1522.
