Turn the water off when brushing your teeth, shower to get clean then get out rather than letting the water run for nothing, don't water your lawn more than necessary, and don't leave water running if you're not using it.

Conserving water is a matter of persistence and following simple rules. Turning off the shower while you lather up, using one sink to wash and another to rinse and running the washer only when it is full are just a few examples of simple conservation tips you can use to save water.

Don't flush the toilet every time; flushing uses a LOT of water. Don't bother to water the lawn. If you have a half-cup of last night's stale water, don't pour it down the sink; dump it on one of your decorative plants or flowers.

Shower less often, and take shorter showers. Take a "Navy shower"; turn on the water to get wet, then turn OFF the water. Wash yourself with a washcloth and soap, then turn the water back on to rinse, then turn the water off again.

Don't let the water run while brushing your teeth or combing your hair or washing dishes. Turn the water on only while you're using it, then turn it OFF.

Only run your washing machine or dishwasher when it is full; don't run partial loads.

Put a plastic dish pan in the sink to catch waste water; in most cases, your waste water is good enough for decorative plants, especially if you use a detergent such as Simple Green.

Don't wash your car, or use a commercial car-wash that uses recycled water. Never use a hose to wash the sidewalk; use a broom instead, and just sweep.

For a longer-term project, consider installing a "gray water" or "reclaimed water" system. Water that runs down our shower or sink drains can be captured, filtered and used to flush the toilet.

It's easy to cut your water usage in half with these techniques. I live near Sacramento, California, where we are in "extreme drought" conditions, and I've cut my water usage by 75% from last year.
