Minnesota is the largest U.S. producer of taconite, an ore of iron. Coal is also mined there. Sand of sufficient quality for glass making is produced there. And a high grade clay called kaolin is also recovered in Minnesota. A number of stone and aggregate products are also part of the state's economy. Copper, manganese, nickel, and titanium are present, but current market pricing does not make their recovery worth the investment.
