Spanish explorers established colonies in the Americas to expand their empire, spread Christianity, and find precious resources such as gold and silver. Additionally, they aimed to gain strategic advantages in trade and to establish a presence in newly discovered territories.
Harsh environmental conditions such as extreme weather, rugged terrains, and limited resources posed significant challenges to explorers. Lack of knowledge about the local customs, languages, and geography made it difficult for explorers to navigate and communicate with indigenous populations. Health risks including diseases, lack of medical care, and limited access to clean water and food often threatened the well-being of explorers on long expeditions.
There were many explorers during the period of the Renaissance. Three well-known explorers are Ferdinand Magellan, Samuel de Champlain and Christopher Columbus.
