Puritans, including those who resided in Salem, wanted to establish a religious Utopia in the new world. Although they came to America to seek religious tolerance, they were not at all tolerant to any wrongdoing or secular activities. They worked hard and were expected to suppress, rather than display their emotions. They lived by a strict moral code, and punished any who drifted from it harshly.

Religion was very important to these people and they were very strict in following the dictates of their faith and they were not tolerant of other religion views. They did no work on Sunday, not even cook food. They had suffered a great deal of persecution in England before coming to America and a great deal of hardship afterward.
