The legend of the foundation of Rome is the legend of the twin brothers Romulus and Remus. This legend is connected to the legend of Aeneas, through which the Romans claimed descent form the Trojans.
Aeneas was a minor character in the Iliad, the legend of the Trojan War. He was rescued by the gods Aphrodite (Vesus), Apollo and Poseidon (Neptune) and sailed the Mediterranean. He landed at Carthage (in Tunisia) , in Sicily and, finally, in Latium (land of the Latins). He married Lavinia, the daughter of Latinus, the king of the Latins. He founded the Latin city of Lavinium, naming it after his wife. His son Ascanius founded the Latin city of Alba Longa and its ruling dynasty. Romulus and Remus were the sons of Rhea Silvia, the daughter of Rhea Silvia, the daughter of Numitor, the king of Alba Longa who had been deposed by Amulius, his brother. This bridged the 400-year gap between the date of the foundation of Rome and the presumed date of the Trojan War.
