Magnificent scenery; fascinating geology and geomorphology (those 2 make the first quality).
Historical significance to its original residents and settlers, and their descendants, alike.
Grand Canyon is a gash in the earth, running for about 200 miles along the Colorado River in the northwest corner of Arizona. The Canyon is about a mile deep, and about 10 miles from north to south rims. The walls of the narrow, zigzag inner gorge expose tilted and faulted Precambrian rock, while the walls of the outer and upper gorge are streaked with thick, colorful, horizontal bands of fossil-bearing rock, representing roughly the "bottom half" of the geologic column.

The Grand Canyon is a "gorge" or "canyon" if you wish. Hence the name Grand Canyon. However, there are two "plateau's" on either side of the canyon which could be considered part of the GC, from a certain point of view.
