Even though some may know this about the women in Sparta, I am proud to announce that I know more than you all do.....just kidding. Anyway, two rights women in Sparta held was the ability to own land and have a n agreement on the men's decisions. Usually their husband's decisions.
Spartan women had more rights compared to Athenian women. In Sparta, women were encouraged to participate in physical training, could own property, and had a more significant role in society due to their responsibilities while men were away for military service. In contrast, Athenian women were largely confined to domestic roles, had limited legal rights, and were excluded from public life. Historical texts, such as Xenophon's writings on Spartan society, highlight these differences in women's status between the two city-states.
In ancient Greece, the lives of women in Athens and Sparta were markedly different. Athenian women were largely confined to domestic roles, with limited rights and little freedom, primarily focusing on managing the household and raising children. In contrast, Spartan women enjoyed greater autonomy and were encouraged to engage in physical training, own property, and participate in social activities, reflecting Sparta's militaristic culture. This disparity highlighted the varying societal values and expectations placed on women in these two city-states.
In both Sparta and Athens, women and slaves had limited rights, but the specifics varied significantly between the two city-states. Spartan women enjoyed relatively more freedoms compared to their Athenian counterparts; they could own property and were educated, as their primary role was to produce strong warriors. In contrast, Athenian women were largely confined to domestic roles and had few legal rights, while slaves in both societies faced harsh conditions and were considered property without personal rights. Overall, both groups experienced significant restrictions, but Spartan women had somewhat more autonomy than those in Athens.
There were at least two groups: women and slaves, that had no or few rights in colonial times.
to vote and sell stuff ?
Sparta: Women had more rights than Athens. They were expected to be strong and protect the house if the men were not home. They were expected to produce stong healthy boys as well. Sparta focused mainly on the human body strength and military rather than research, development, and government. Sparta was more poor than Athens. I think Sparta had less slaves as well. Sparta's God was if Im not mistaken, Ares or Artemis. Athens: Women had less rights than Sparta and I think they were not allowed to leave the house without a slave or the husband. Athens focused on research, development, and government producing democracy which spread throughout Greece. Athens was generally a rich city. Athens' God was Athena.
1 differences are that Sparta allowed women to play sports but also wanted them 2 be independent, when Athens just wanted there women to stay inside and not do anything. they wanted the men to do everything
In Sparta you had to join the army or navy when you were 7 years old! But in Athens you had to go when you were 16. Another difference is that if you where a girl in Sparta you had rights. But in Athens you barley have any rights.
