Two ways liquids vaporize are evaporation, in which molecules escape the liquid's surface and become a gas, and boiling, in which the entire liquid reaches its boiling point and turns into a gas.
Evaporation and Extreme Hot or Cold
The transition from a solid to a gas involves two steps: first, the solid must melt into a liquid, absorbing heat energy in the process; then, the liquid must vaporize into a gas, which also requires an input of heat energy.
When a liquid becomes a gas, the process is called "vaporization." This can occur in two ways: evaporation, which happens at the surface of the liquid at any temperature, and boiling, which occurs throughout the liquid at a specific temperature known as the boiling point.
Vaporization occurs through boiling, where a substance changes from a liquid to a gas at its boiling point, or through evaporation, where a substance changes from a liquid to a gas at below its boiling point, usually at the surface.
Water can turn into a liquid through the process of condensation, where water vapor changes back into liquid form. It can also turn into a gas through the process of evaporation, where liquid water changes into water vapor.
The heat of fusion is used to first convert the volume of liquid to its solid form, then the heat of vaporization is used to convert the solid to vapor. By summing the two energy values, you can calculate the total energy required to vaporize the liquid volume.
CS2 is not a gas at room temperature. CS2 is carbon disulfide, a volatile liquid--meaning it does vaporize easily, but its natural state is liquid. It's a fairly universal solvent that solubilizes easily in water, alcohol, and oils.
