Actually, air is not cleaned before reaching the lungs. That is why severe lung damage is caused by living in highly polluted areas and smoking. In fact, air is breathed into the lungs, and transported through your circulatory system by way of red blood cells. It is finally cleaned when blood is pumped through the kidneys
Nasal hairs and mucus.

When you inhale, the air you breathe in is cleaned by cilia in your trachea. This helps remove dust and other pathogens from the air when it is on its way to your lungs

The nose both cleans and warms the air before it reaches the lungs.

I'm not too sure, but I think they act as a filter for dust, dirt and all that gunk in the air before it reaches your lungs. :)
The air is not filtered like it is by the nosehairs. If it's cold outside the air isn't warmed up before it reaches the throat and lungs.
Oxygen passes through the lining of the lungs and into the blood. Carbon dioxide passes from the blood out into the air in the lungs. The blood flows near the surface of the lining in structures called capillaries, which are composed of tissue thin enough to allow this O2/CO2 transfer.
