Type-1, native or bare-metal hypervisors. These are the main software operating on the host computer. All the computer does is run the hypervisor - of course with the virtual machines then running on top of that. Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware ESX/ESXi are examples of a "type-1" hypervisor.

Type-2 or hosted hypervisors. These run a base OS like Windows or Linux with a hypervisor application running on top of that. The virtual machines run on top of the hypervisor application. VMware Workstation, and VirtualBox are examples of a "type-2" hypervisor.
