Unsure if your question is about duties within the military, or in the civilian populace. In the military, very few African Americans served in the US Navy, mainly in jobs that involved being a steward or stevedore. In the Army, they served in segregated units, in duties from transportation (trucking) to combat units (Infantry, Armor, Artillery) and in at least one unit, they served a fighter pilots. In the civilian side of things, many of them moved into manufacturing jobs they had previously been denied. The shortage of workers in factories meant that African Americans and women were hired for jobs that they had not been able to hold before.
