Gold is not "formed" in rock so much as it will tend to concentrate under certain geologic conditions. We see evidence of gold grains in some rivers, and nuggets in some rock formations. There are also veins of gold that are frequently associated with quartz in some rock strata. This native gold has a good amount of silver in with it. There are massive quantities of gold floating around in sea water, but on the atomic level, and, as such, are not recoverable. Remember that gold is an element, and it isn't "made" or "formed" in nature so much as it is a part of the "mix" of the things that make up the earth's structure. A link can be found below to the Wikipedia post on gold. Check it out and pay particular attention to the section on Occurance.
Pyrite is actually a mineral. It is often found within metamorphic and sedimentary rocks though.Read more: What_type_of_rock_is_pyrite
In California there is a lot of gold on rocks and it often looks like glitter or gold specks. It can often be referred to as foolÍs gold and is found in river banks on rocks.
These remains are called fossils.
Gold was sometimes found in quartz, a white rock that often contains mineral veins.

Gold values have been reported in quartz stringers (veins) in basalt in northeaster New Mexico (e.g., Bueyeros, NM; Capulin volcanics). Source of gold may be epigenetically related to suspect younger acidic intrusives beneath the basalts. Bill Mansker, Ph.D.
Gold is usually found in metamorphic rock but can also be found in sedimentary rock. In deep mines, quartz rock is found in association with gold.
gold does not form in a rock. however it does forms along igneous rock and quarts veins. For gold to be present one of these two rocks will more then likely be there as well. (In some large gold nuggets, pieces of quarts will be stuck to the gold)
Fool's gold is the mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite. Pyrite is sometimes called Fools Gold because of its similarity in color and shape to Gold. The last thing you want is to be considered a fool the next time you go gold-panning. Pyrite is the most common of the sulfide minerals which is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2. Sometimes real gold is embedded in pyrite formations but this mineral is usually found associated with other sulfides or oxides in quartz veins, sedimentary rock, and metamorphic rock, as well as in coal beds and as a replacement mineral in fossils.
Pyrite is called "fool's gold".
Reef gold is found in calcified objects or rocks. Reef gold was the gold that most gold miners found in rock form.

In sulfide veins and scattered throughout igneous rock, chalcopyrite is found in many locations throughout the world.

Pyrite (fools gold) is usually found in Quartz veins, Sedimentary rock, and Metamorphic rock,as well as in coal beds. I once found a vein of pyrite in slate.
