Even thought the vikings crossed the Atlantic in their ships, the main quality of this type of ship is that it had a flat design that allowed it to be used as an amphibian assault vessel with which you could surprise attack settlement near beaches. It was also important that the relatively light ship could be dragged over land, if the vikings had to transfer from one river to another.
