The role of a wife is different depending who you are asking. She can work or stay home, take care of the kids and cook and work or a combination of any of the above. Most people think she should support and be a help mate to her husband in whatever way possible.
It depends on whether the marriage is traditional or modern. The traditional role of the wife has been to take care of the home, raise children and handle domestic duties like cooking and cleaning, and be a companion and helper to her husband. But that role has been steadily changing as the role of women in society has also changed. Today, depending on where you live, you may find some marriages are still traditional and based on the man being "the boss" (the old-time marriage vows presupposed the wife would "obey" the husband, but today, most couples promise to "love and cherish" rather than the woman pledging to obey as if she were subordinate to the man).
The modern relationship is where the woman may have a career, is educated, and practices family planning. She and her husband both help with household chores, and while the wife still tends to do most of the child-rearing, many men today are willing to at least help. The role of the wife often depends on the culture-- in some cultures, women's roles are still very restricted and limited, and so is how they are treated when they get married. In other cultures, women have more opportunities and their husband does not treat them like a servant, but rather like a partner and a best friend.
The traditional role of the wife has been to take care of the home, raise children and handle domestic duties like cooking and cleaning, and be a companion and helper to her husband. But some marriages today are more egalitarian, with both the husband and wife working and both sharing in some of the household duties; further, because of wider access to education and to birth control, couples now decide how many children to have, based on what they can afford and on whether they want a big or a small family. So the wife in this type of marriage is no longer restricted to only staying home and having kids-- she may have a career, and her husband may help with raising their children. But whether the marriage is traditional or more modern, the wife should still be the loving partner of the husband, and he should be equally committed to her happiness as well.
