They are not measuring your pulse when they look at your chest. They are measuring your respiration (breathing) rates. Many nurses may say they are measuring your pulse because otherwise some people will sub-conconsciously alter their breathing patterns and theyre results wont be valid. They are counting how many times you breathe in and out in a certain amount of time. Whether your breathing is rapid, slow, shallow or deep.
When taking a pulse you need to pay attention to the rate of the pulse (how fast/slow?) and the quality of the pulse (how weak/strong?).
