It actually does not matter so long as the area is unique to your network topology. Most network backbones are apparently set to area ID 1, according to my instructor at ITT Technical Institute.

I am pretty sure that a WAN connection would not be needed for a home network. A WAN is a Wide-Area Network. A WAN would be used to connect to your business computer from home. A LAN is a Local-Area Network. It should be sufficient if the network is simply for sharing files or printers, etc.

A CAN is actually a type of Local Area Network (LAN). It is larger than a LAN but smaller than a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). A Home Area Network is the network used in an individual home. Home users may have all of their computers in the house connected toghether by CAT-V (twisted pair) cable or by a wireless network (actually called a WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network).
