Roald Amundsen explored the South Pole, and that is how he became famous.
Roald Amundsen and his team were the first to reach the south pole, and that's the most southerly point in the entire world.
It was Roald Amundsen who set out from the Bay of Whales and used dog teams for the entire journey, unlike Scott who man-hauled his sledges and who had only four sets of skis for five men, starting from McMurdo Sound and taking the extremely difficult route up the Beardmore Glacier. I recommend the book "The Worst Journey in the World" for a very moving account of the Scott expedition. It was written by the man who found the bodies of Scott, Wilson and Bowers.
Portugal explored the New World first
Roald Amundsen's ordinary world was Norway, where he was born and raised. He grew up surrounded by nature and developed a love for exploration and adventure from an early age. This environment helped shape his ambitions and success as a polar explorer.
In the Heroic Era of polar explorers, Raoul Amundsen is set apart as arguably the best. His vocation was exploring. He learned from Fridjof Nansen, a premier polar explorer of the north, who studied life and survival with native northern peoples. Amundsen understood equipment required for polar exploration and was a solid planner. Amundsen was the first human to set foot at the South Pole, among his other accomplishments. After his success in Antarctica, he returned to 'civilization' and lectured for months, raising money to pay his expedition debts. This work continued until news of Scott's demise caught up with the world, in November 2012.
