It was Jacques Cartier that explored Canada and claimed it for France. When arriving in the region the area was then known as Newfoundland. It was in 1534 when Jacques Cartier arrived in the area now known as Canada.
He claimed the area around Mississippi for France.

First France, then it was given to Spain, then back to France again, and it was then sold to the United States which still has possession of it.
The first Europeans were the LaVerendrye brothers in 1743 who claimed the area for France.
