The French in 1954 were defeated at the battle of Dien Bien Phu March 13 - May 7, 1954 .
His name was Vo Nguyen Giap . (Who is still alive at 102 years of age .)
In the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, the French believed they would have aerial support, and that their superior artillery would bring them success. However, the Viet Minh army surrounded the French with heavy artillery. After fifty-seven days, the French were defeated, bring the colony of French Indochina to an end.
The French were defeated at the siege of Dien Bien Phu on May 7 , 1954 ; see related link below to additional information on the siege .
France underestimated the enemy. The French had already made the decision to pull out of Indochina, but it wanted to do so with a sense of honor and leave a favorable impression on the Vietnamese. The task fell on the new French commander General Navarre. French paratrooper jumped on and occupied Dien Bien Phu (Operation Castor) in the northern part of Vietnam. General Giap's Viet Minh Army surrounded Dien Bien Phu and pounded it with artillery and infantry attacks until the French had no choice but to surrender. * Two possible solutions to Dien Bien Phu which did not happen were the evacuation of French forces (Operation Xenophon) and a US B-29 nuclear bombing of the Vietnamese (Operation Vulture). The US was receptive to the latter plan, but Churchill was against it. * The Battle of Dien Bien Phu by Jules Roy gives a very good account of this event, although I found it to be written with a slight pro-French bias.
Although no COUNTRY surrendered, units of the French Army did - thus ending French involvement in the Vietnam conflict.

The US Marines at Khe Sanh won because Khe Sanh did not fall to the NVA. At Khe Sanh, General Giap intended to repeat his success against the French Army at Dien Bien Phu fourteen years earlier, but the siege failed because the US managed to supply Khe Sanh by air and provide tactical air support for the defenders, whereas the French air link to Dien Bien Phu was tenuous at best after that siege began.
The French army survivers were allowed to return to France.
