The peopling of America has long been a very controversial subject with adherents of one theory or another fiercely defending their positions. It was long held that the Clovis people were the first humans in North America and the Clovis first crowd still holds that view. But finds ar Meadowcroft and other places have all but debunked the Clovis first position. Artifacts at Meadowcroft are dated to between 16,000 and 19,000 years. If the 19,000 dating is correct then Meadowcroft would be the oldest known site of human habitation in the Western Hemisphere.
over millions of years old
The artifacts found at Meadowcroft Rock Shelter, such as evidence of human habitation dating back to 19,000-16,000 years ago, challenged existing theories about the peopling of the Americas. These findings suggested that humans were in the Americas much earlier than previously thought, leading to a reevaluation of migration patterns and settlement timelines in the region.
Meadowcroft (South of Pittsburgh, PA) contains very old Pre-Clovis artifacts. The layers of remains at this site start in the 1960's and continue down for almost 17,000 years in a sequencial fashion. There is a huge, on-going debate about when people first populated North America and where they came from. A "traditional" view holds that the Clovis people were the first Indians. They were here roughly 10,000 years ago. The Meadowcroft site yielded some unexpected results ... very old dates (much older than 10k years) that were used to support other alternative theories about pre-clovis settling of the Americas. Cool site. Very much worth the visit.
