The British were a professional army with superior numbers, at least at the beginning. The Minutemen were fighting on their own turf, well known to them; and their numbers increased as the fighting progressed. Once the fighting moved to Concord Bridge, the Minutemen fought from protected, concealed positions, while the Regulars fought in the open.
