North Vietnamese shore batteries often duelled with US Navy warships that were working the gunline (shore bombardments). North Viet Navy torpedo parts attacked US Warships in the Tonkin Gulf. North Viet Air Force MiG17 jets attacked the US destroyer USS Higbee and cruiser USS Oklahoma City in 1972. North Viet Air Force helicopters attacked and sunk a US Navy Swift Boat (PCF-19) in 1968.
Look at the outfit's (regimental) website; those normally list all of the "streamers" (campaign ribbons) earned by that particular unit. "If" the 1st of the 0 deuce was there, then it more than likely has earned at least one "campaign steamer" for "Iraqi Freedom." It did serve in the Viet War however, and was stationed in I Corps (Camp Eagle, Camp Evans, Phu Bai AOs (Areas of Operations)
During briefings and other forms of communications (radio, messengers, written dispatches, etc.) the South Viet Nationals were "civilians-South Viet type", and the South Viet Military were simply "ARVN's".
Cong is short for Viet Cong. The Viet Cong were the communist guerrilla forces backed by North Vietnam when they fought against South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
