How is the karyotype determined?

The number of chromosomes present.

What is the minimum number of bacteria present on one of your plates?

The minimum number of bacteria present on a plate is 1. Depending on how well the bacterial colony was isolated, there may be different kinds of bacteria present.

How does dehydration help control bacteria?

Dehydration helps control bacteria in a great number of ways. Dehydration denies the bacteria the water that they need to survive.

What was a major factor in the growth of the population of the English colonies?

A major factor in the growth of the population of the English colonies was the number of settlers that immigrated to the colonies. They caused the populations to gradually grow as they settled in these colonies.

What are a group of microorganisms called?

In the broadest terms, a group of microorganisms can be an ecosystem of its own, or a population. For example the group of microorganisms that inhabit your mouth are the population of your oral cavity. A species is every organism that exhibits the same DNA (within reason, there are so many ways DNA can be mutated) and key features. The most often time you see a group of microorganisms may be on a agar plate, after incubating the plate you've streaked with bacteria. In this case the groups, or blobs, are called 'colonies'. While each colony has millions(!!) of bacterial cells in it (hence why you can see it!), they all came from one bacteria. Because we know this we can count the number of colonies and know how many bacteria were originally on the plate, somethings microbiologists call CFU, or Colony-Forming-Units. Many examples in food and beverage industry involved maximum CFU values per mL of beverage or gram of food for it to pass inspection. This is how it is determined.

Will isolated colonies always be in the second sector on the streak plate?

No. It depends on the number of bacteria present in the initial sample. If the number of bacteria in the initial sample are limited, you may get isolated colonies in the first streak. If the number of bacteria in the sample are high, it may take several streaks before the sample is diluted to the point where isolated colonies are evident.

What is Quebec colony counter?

A Quebec colony counter is a device that is used to count the number of bacteria colonies in a sample.

How could the pour plate procedure be used for counting the number of bacteria in a sample?

It is recommended that plates that should be counted should be between 30 and 300 McCance and Harrigan (1992). When more that 300 colonies you cant count them with great accuracy and represented with TNC ( too numerous to count). If colonies are less that 30 do you conclude that there was no bacteria in a product or food, if counting less than 20 colonies is unrealistic. Some standards are zero tolerant where even one colony means alot. So IDF (19991/1992) came up with a formula which takes in account the plates with/ even less than 30 colonies. The formula takes into account all sums of colonies obtained on the pour plates to come up with total cfus

Why does the quadrant steak technique able to give single colonies?

Isolation streaking yields isolated colonies by dilution. When the first zone is complete, the loop is flamed and cooled, and a small number of bacteria are dragged out of zone one to complete zone two. The loop is then flamed and cooled again, and a smaller number of bacteria are dragged out of zone two to complete zone three. The loop is flamed and cooled again, and a very small number of bacteria are pulled from zone three to complete zone four.
