Robots are there to serve problems that we cannot do ourselves, or would prefer not to do on a regular basis. They are used as surrogates for jobs that we don't want to do. For instance, several robots that form a car construction line are much better than having several people doing the same job. For a start, they don't require wages, and they perform exactly the same job with exactly the same accuracy every time, no mistakes. In the case of robotics with computers, they are used to perform tasks that we could not do efficiently, or even safely. For example, hundreds of lives could have been saved in the Chernobyl disaster if they'd had access to robots to move the radioactive debris, as compared to humans. The people assigned to that job were nicknamed 'Biorobots', for the simple reason that it made it sound much less horrific!
The robots in The Surrogates serve as surrogates of the humans' daily life. As in, they carry out all activity that the person would normally partake in.
