the Civil War began due to the south wanting to succeed ( separate ) from the United States, over states rights, the war was not going well for the North, many families wanted it over, and believed if the southern states wanted to no longer be a part of e US, then let them separate. Lincoln needed a cause to rally the masses behind his decision to continue the war, that's when he decided to use a human rights campaign, called abolishment of slavery, whe he went public near the end of the war with this concept, many people no longer opposed the war, and got behind Lincoln to continue the fight, thus putting the initial reason for the war on the back burner, the war ended pretty quick once the reason for the fight changed!
