Battle of Antietam and Gettysburg.
Mathew Brady was a famous Civil War photographer.
It gives a view of the world that we have never had before. The first photographs of war was durning the civil war. Even though Mathew Brady did move bodies and weapons in his photos the pictures changed the mind of how people viewed war. TV didn't help the view of war for the Vietnam War. Photos tell historian a great deal about a time and place.
Start by getting enough lens that the athlete will fill the frame from the waist up. If you look at the photos in the newspaper's sports section or a sports magazine, you'll notice that all the pictures are real tight on the athlete. Pro sports photographers don't make pictures of half the field with a little ant-sized thing in the middle that's supposed to be Tom Brady, they make pictures with Tom Brady filling the frame. Since Tom Brady is a football player, this requires a very long lens - all the AP photographers who shoot football own 600mm lenses, and now there's an 800mm lens on the market. (There is a very long list of new cars that cost less than an 800mm Nikkor lens...) If your child plays basketball or baseball/softball, a 300mm lens should be plenty.
It had far reaching consequences. Pictures of the aftermath of battles could be sent all over the world. Pictures of loved ones could be carried into battle, or sent back to the family. It was the first war that was recorded visually.
