George Washington defeated the Hessians, in the battle of Trenton, because he made a surprise attack on Christmas day. Keep in mind the Hessians had just finished their partying, they were drunk, tired, and not ready for battle.
It happened on Christmas Day, and George Washington crossed the Delaware River (famous picture- look it up!) and took the partying British soldiers by surprise. (Hey, it was Christmas!) And after he took Trenton, he went right on and did the exact same thing to Princeton.
