Russia was never in the Battle of the Somme. The Somme was on the western front, and the battle involved the British and some French against the Germans. The Russians were fighting hundreds of miles away, on the other side of Germany on the eastern front. The Battle of the Somme was in 1916. Russia did not pull out of the war until 1917.

The German strategy was to control the Volga river and stop the flow of supplies into Russia thus eventually winning the war on the Eastern Front . The Germans lost the battle for the strategic city of Stalingrad February 2, 1943 losing the German's Sixth Army along with most of the Italian , Romanian and Hungarian troops supporting the battle . The Germans lost and never regained the initiative on the Eastern Front and the Russians came to lose Berlin and the war against the Russians .
The name of the battlefield that was between German and Russia is called the Rzhev. The Rzhev was also referred to as the meat grinder during WWII because the battle was at its peak in the area.
The reason German generals opened a front in the east was due to the fact that Russia had mobilized at a quicker pace than had been expected. Russia was also seeing early success with victories in eastern Prussia.
