During World War II, numerous battles occurred -- from the very start of hostilities in September 1939 to the final armistice in the Pacific in August of 1945. Perhaps most notable of them all would be the Battle of Britain in 1940, by which Great Britain prevented Germany from a quick victory. As notable would be Pearl Harbor, through which the United States was brought into the conflict in 1941. Stalingrad (1942-43) should also be mentioned, as this battle proved that the German Army could be beaten and in fact proved to be a critical turning-point in the entire conflict.
