The Battle of Sabine Crossroads-Pleasant Hill, where a Union Army led by General Nathaniel Banks was defeated by General Richard Taylor's Confederate Army. It was part of the last major campaign west of the Mississippi. It was fought on April 8-10, 1864 and saw the failure of the Federal attempt to capture Shreveport and deeply penetrate in the Trans-Mississippi going up the Red River.
The Battle of Gettysburg, fought in July 1863, was not part of Ulysses S. Grant's 1864 campaign. Grant's major operations in 1864 included the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor, as he aimed to engage and defeat Confederate forces in Virginia. Gettysburg occurred earlier in the war and was led by General George Meade for the Union.

The Battle of Atlanta had not been part of Grant's plan. His orders to Sherman were simply to destroy the Army of Tennessee, wherever he found it. When Sherman had failed to do this, the capture of Atlanta seemed a more desirable objective, partly because it would make big headlines in the North and restore morale, in advance of the 1864 election, which Lincoln believed he would lose on account of Northern war-weariness.
