The floods. The River Nile flooded in July and people built gates, canals, so that it could not destroy their lands. When the flood retreated it left fertile silt all over the banks and this way made the lands nearby fertile as well. The Egyptians learned to build canals and when the river was going back into its bed, they closed the canals with gates and stored the water. They could water the higher places as well by using the saduf or shadoof -a bucket-like thing made of leather and moved by a sweep pole . The Egyptians were able to grow grains along the Nile (in the middle of an enormous desert).
