The "Mayaguez Incident" (May 1975) is considered the last act of the Vietnam War, even though it occurred one month after the North overran the South (April 1975). No US Soldiers were involved with the "Mayaguez", the only casualties were US Marines, US Sailors, and US Airmen; approximately 40 killed.
The North Vietnamese attacked in force and Vietnam was reunited as a Communist state.

Ford reacted with a rescue mission to retake the ship, SS Mayaguez, but the mission was a disaster. Several US Marines were killed, and some left behind to face torture and execution by the Khmer Rouge. The crew of the Mayaguez was later released.
