The Moche civilization was characterized by several city-states located in the northern coast of Peru. Each city-state was ruled by a powerful elite class and had its own unique artistic and architectural style. These city-states were primarily known for their advanced irrigation systems, impressive adobe temples, and elaborate funerary practices.
Both Chavín cult and Mochica State were influential societies in ancient Peru, but they differed in key aspects. The Chavín cult focused on religious practices and central authority within a wide cultural sphere, while the Mochica State was a more centralized political entity with a strong warrior elite. The Chavín society is linked to the development of religious art and architecture, while the Mochica State is known for its advanced irrigation systems and intricate ceramics.
The Incas adopted the Mochica's innovative techniques for constructing massive buildings using clay bricks and mortar. They incorporated these methods into their own architecture, leading to the construction of impressive structures like Machu Picchu and Sacsayhuamán.
Mochica did not "live." Mochica is the extinct pre-columbian language of northwest Peru. By the beginning of the 20th century it was spoken in only a few villages of the Chiclayo region of northern Peru. It was first documented in 1607 by Fernando de la Carrera in his Arte de La Lengva Yvnga de Los Valles del Obispado de Truxillo del Peru, con vn Confessonario, y todas las Oraciones Christianas, traducidas en la lengua, y otras cosaspublished in 1644 (Lima) but has not been spoken as a language since the 1920's and the last loan words seem to have fallen out of usage by 1960.
Archaeologists named the Chavin culture after the site of Chavín de Huántar, where the culture's ruins were first discovered. The Moche culture was named after the Moche River in northern Peru, where their archaeological sites were extensively studied.
