The passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) started to become extinct in the mid 1800s and the last surviving specimen died in 1914. The very last one was a female named Martha who died at Cincinnati Zoo at about 1:00 pm on September 1, 1914. There is a wonderful exhibit at the Zoo honoring Martha.
Other less-known species that may have become extinct during the decade include:
- Kioea (Chaetoptila angustipluma) of Hawaii
- Virgin Islands Screech owl (Megascops nudipes newtoni)
- Finsch's Duck (Chenonetta finschi) from New Zealand
Dodo birds are what you may be thinking of. They were an ugly bird, fat like chicken and they couldn't fly away. They were all killed for food.
Several birds became extinct in the mid to late 1800s including the New Zealand quail, the Finsch's Duck, and the Labrador duck. The North Island snipe also became extinct around this time.
The dodo became extinct from the island of Mauritius in the 1860s.

The dodo bird became extinct in the early 1600's. The Triceratops became extinct long before that.
The Dodo Bird
The Dodo bird was last seen in 1662, so it went extinct about that time.
If an animal in a ecosystem chain became extinct - the WHOLE ecosystem would collapse because, believe it or not, every single species counts. For example, if a bird species in a forest became extinct - everything that ate the bird would die without their "food" and everything that ate them would die and so on and so forth.
The Dodo bird is not an endangered species; it is an extinct species of bird. It is widely known that dodo birds became extinct because of human intervention; they were doing fine, minding their own business, until humans found these to be a good source of food and sustenance. So humans hunted them until their hearts' content, devoured their eggs and fed any remains to the hunting dogs. Dodo birds are extinct - period.
The Diatryma was a human sized and heavily built flightless bird. The Diatryma became extinct around 2 million years ago.
