There is no ONE particular bit that should be used on every single horse, horses like people are unique and there-fore have different needs.

Things you have to think about are, What you want to do, what your horse is like, the shape of his mouth (does he have a low pallate or narrow gap between both teeth), what are you like as a rider, etc etc

Some horses will go better in a thick egg but others in a thin Dee ring or a myler.

Your instructor or tack shop would probably be better at suggesting a suitable bit for you and your horse.

You could also consider a bitless bridle if you find that your horse does not like a bit

What kind of horse should have a full cheek snaffle bit?

Its is not the "kind" of horse that determines the type of bit you should use it is the discipline and training level of the horse that determines it. A full cheek snaffle should be used on a horse being ridden english. It is a fairly mild bit that can be used on horses of all training levels. The cheeks pieces are there mainly to prevent the bit from slipping from side to side in the horses mouth but it does provide a bit more action in the horses mouth than a loose ring snaffle.

What is the best way to bit a horse?

Standing on the left side of the horse, put your left hand on the bit and your right hand between the horses ears on the crown piece. Put the bit to the horses mouth and use the command the horse knows. When the horse accepts the bit slide it into the mouth. Pull the top of the bride over the horses ears. If you have a bridle with sliders, make sure they are not in the horses eyes. Then buckle the throughout latch and any other buckles you have. Tip: If the horse it resisting the bit, slide your finger in his mouth (not behind the teeth) and in the near back of his mouth you will find a space with no teeth. Push down on the gum, it will force the horse to open it's mouth, then you can slide the bit in quickly.

What is a bit on a bridle for?

a bit is used to encourage the the horse to turn and to stop - when you pull right the bit pulls in the horse's mouth and it makes him turn right - when you pull back on the reins it puts pressure on the horses mouth and it will stop. Many horses are trained to turn from the feel of the reains or by use of your heels on their sides. So, the bit isn't for turning when the horse has been trained this way.

When to use figure 8 or nose band in race horses?

The purpose of a figure 8 is to keep the horse from opening his mouth and avoiding the bit, making the bit more effective. Since horses are individuals just like humans are, they require different tack.

How do you bridle a horse?

You should stand on the horses near side (Left side). Holding the bridle by the Crown piece, lift it over the horses head. Use your fingers to press on the horses bars and get him to open his mouth to allow you to gently slip the bit inside. Once the bit is in, fit the bridle to the rest of the head by pulling (gently) the bridle over the ears and making sure the straps are buckled appropriately.

Which bit is harder on a horses mouth?

If you use a snaffle now, you can get a three ring bit which is a bit harder on your horse's mouth. Its illegal to put your reins on the 3rd ring so if he is still too strong on the 2nd ring, you have to but a bit of leather(its specially made to do this, you get it in any equestrian shop) to connect the 1st ring to the 3rd ring.

How do you use chin strap with dee ring bit in horses?

You would attach the chin strap (not a chain) to the rings of the bit, between the reins and the cheekpieces. The chin strap won't work like one that is attached to a bit with leverage, but it will help keep the bit more secure in the mouth.

How is a horse tender mouth?

The term 'tender mouth' refers to a horse that won't or can't tolerate a harsh bit or a rider's hard hands on the reins. Most horses start life with a soft or tender mouth. Through years of improper or poorly fitting bits and riders with harsh hands the corners and bars of the horse's mouth can either get tough or they can be extra sensitive and touchy around his mouth. My motto is 'use the least amount of bit to get the most from your horse'. In other words, start with easy, humane bits and hopefully you won't need to ever put a harsh bit in your horse's mouth. As long as you are getting what you want from the horse there is no need to go to a harder bit. I have senior aged horses that still respond well to an eggbutt snaffle.
