Manitoba is NOT a country. It is a province of Canada. It became a province with the passage of the Manitoba Act by the Parliament of Canada in 1870 - but it was nowhere near as big as it is now. Its borders were expanded in 1881, taking land from the Northwest Territories and the District of Keewatin - but there was a dispute with the province of Ontario over which province a large chunk of land on the east of Manitoba and the west of Ontario should belong to; the national government awarded Ontario the disputed portion in 1889. Manitoba assumed its current its current size in 1912, by absorbing land from the Northwest Territories to reach 60°N, uniform with the northern reach of its western neighbours Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.
