Though all it's body parts are vital (like the lungs for ventilation, the heart for blood circulation, the liver for the break down of toxins and the control of blood glucose etc.) the body part that makes it unique is its tough skin on it's back. The armadillo can curl up into a ball, exposing no flesh other than the tough skin on its back, and can therefore, protect itself from predators.
It's wings. The patterns are used for intimidation.
