In chapter 15, the children find Atticus outside the Maycomb jail. He is sitting in front of the jailhouse door reading a book, keeping watch over Tom Robinson to protect him from a possible lynch mob.
Atticus is a free white man and even it he was african American the story takes places long after slavery was abolished so I'm mm ot sure what you are talking about. . . Maybe you should try reading the book
Miss Caroline told Scout to stop reading at home because she believed that Scout was already too advanced compared to the rest of her classmates. Miss Caroline thought it would be better for Scout to start learning at the same pace as the other students.
